IRI - Latin American Regional Study Mission: "Citizen Security, Political Stability and the Economy"

Date:
Sunday, September 6, 2015 to Saturday, September 19, 2015

To address the growing concerns in the LAC region regarding citizen security, IRG is hosting a study mission for national legislators from Colombia, El Salvador and Panama for a two-week Latin American regional study mission in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles, California, with a focus on increasing citizen security as a means to increase democratic political stability, strengthen the economy and increase regional trade.

Citizen security is the conjunction of social, political, economic, cultural and institutional conditions that help guarantee citizens’ rights to life, liberty and security of person. Strengthening citizen security requires mutual understanding between citizens and authorities and a shared responsibility for investing in preventive strategies. Where illicit activity threatens citizen safety, and affects public confidence in democratic institutions, IRG and its partner IRI help elected officials, law enforcement and citizens implement strategies that are inclusive, representative and sensitive to political, economic and social realities. By strengthening the capacity of political decision-makers to plan and coordinate innovative, inclusive and tailored initiatives for overcoming security threats, regional political leaders will be better equipped to propose solutions and government actions to combat crime, increase public confidence in democratic institutions and cultivate economically prosperous societies.
